If there are multiple branches that aren’t growing any leaves, this is an indication that there is a problem. On the flip side, if you have a tree that isn’t allowing the leaves to fall off naturally in the fall, it is also a sign that the tree is in trouble. It could be caused by a disease or a lack of water that the tree needs.
– Trunk Damage: You can tell a lot about a tree by taking a close look at its trunk. You shouldn’t see any bark that is falling off without growing back. If you notice that there are large patches of bare, smooth wood, that is a problem. Another sign that the tree is in trouble is the presence of cracks on the trunk. If you notice that there are vertical cracks on the trunk of your tree, that isn’t good.
– Fungus: If there is fungus growing anywhere on your tree, that means that there is rot in that area. It will often grow near the ground, on the roots. Even when you find fungus growing in your grass, it could be growing near the root system underground and helping break down the roots there.
– Damaged Roots: The last thing you want is for your tree’s roots to be damaged. This means that your tree doesn’t have the stability that it needs to stay upright. While the roots are underground and you don’t see them, that doesn’t mean that you can’t spot root damage. When your tree is leaning to one side, it usually means that the roots aren’t supporting the tree any longer. This is an incredibly dangerous position for your tree to be in.
